kin Biopsy

a. Skin Cancer Checks – Full Body & Spot Checks

At BE Medical Centre, our doctors perform a range of skin biopsy techniques to assist in the accurate diagnosis of skin conditions, including possible skin cancers.

A skin biopsy involves removing a small sample of skin tissue for laboratory examination. The type of biopsy performed—such as punch biopsy, shave biopsy, or excisional biopsy—depends on the location and appearance of the lesion being assessed.

Biopsies may be recommended when:

  • A lesion appears unusual or changes in size, colour, or shape
  • A previous treatment hasn’t resolved the lesion
  • A definitive diagnosis is needed before treatment

Procedures are performed under local anaesthetic in our accredited medical facility. Patients receive clear aftercare instructions to support wound healing and reduce the risk of infection. Follow-up appointments are arranged to discuss pathology results and next steps in management, if needed.

All procedures carry potential risks and benefits. Individual outcomes may vary. Medicare rebates may apply—please enquire when booking.

c. Non-Surgical Skin Cancer Management – Topical Therapies, Photodynamic Therapy & Cryotherapy

At BE Medical Centre, we offer a range of non-surgical skin cancer treatment options tailored to individual needs and the type of lesion diagnosed.

Our treatment approach may include:

Topical creams:

  • Aldara® (Imiquimod): Stimulates the immune system to attack abnormal cells.
  • Efudix® (5-Fluorouracil): Targets and destroys abnormal sun-damaged cells.
  • Tolak® (5-Fluorouracil 4%): A newer formulation used for field treatment of actinic keratoses.

These prescription creams are applied at home over several weeks under the guidance of our doctors.

Non-Surgical Skin

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT):

  • Daylight PDT: A gentler treatment for sunspots using natural daylight to activate a photosensitising cream.
  • Red Light PDT: Uses a specialised medical red light source after application of the same cream to selectively target precancerous cells.

Cryotherapy:

Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze and destroy superficial lesions like actinic keratoses and some early skin cancers.

Non-surgical treatments may be suitable for specific cases of superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma in situ (Bowen’s disease), and solar keratoses. Treatment selection depends on the diagnosis, location, patient preference, and skin type.

All treatments are delivered under the care of experienced skin cancer doctors, and individual suitability is discussed during consultation.

Surgical Skin Cancer

d. Surgical Skin Cancer Treatments – Excision, Flaps, Grafts & Specialist Referrals

BE Medical Centre provides a comprehensive range of surgical treatments for skin cancer, performed by experienced skin cancer doctors in our accredited medical facility. Our primary aim is the complete removal of skin cancer while considering the best possible cosmetic outcome for each patient.

Surgical options offered include:

  • Simple excisions: Removal of skin cancers with a margin of healthy tissue, followed by standard suturing.
  • Advanced excisions: Involving local flap repairs or skin grafts (split or full thickness) to reconstruct the area after removal of larger or more complex lesions.
  • Curettage and cautery: A technique suitable for select superficial lesions, where abnormal tissue is scraped and the area cauterised.
  • Slow Mohs: A staged excision technique that allows margin control for selected cases, particularly on the face or other sensitive areas.

We also offer

  • LED light therapy sessions post-operatively to assist with wound healing.
  • Active scar management plans tailored to skin type and surgical site.

Patients requiring complex or sub-specialist input are referred to Plastic or Specialist Skin Cancer Surgeons, with whom we work closely to ensure continuity of care.

Treatment plans are developed following biopsy or clinical diagnosis, and individual suitability is discussed in detail during your consultation. All surgical procedures carry potential risks and benefits, and outcomes may vary between individuals.
